In the freezer & the fridge

8 09 2010

I had the opportunity to try out two products recently – one from the freezer and one from the fridge. As a part of the Foodbuzz Tastemaker Program, I received a coupon for a Buitoni product of my choice.

I settled on the Shrimp & Lobster Ravioli with Garlic Butter Sauce because it sounded the most appealing.

You can check out the ingredients here but here’s a glance at the Nutrition Facts:

My first reaction was…are you kidding? The calories seemed a little steep. And then I took a look at the sodium. Whoa. The ingredients list also has a bunch of things I can’t pronounce, which I’m not into.

I assume a lot of the calories came from the garlic butter sauce, which comes in a pouch that you heat up. Liquid things in pouches kinda gross me out, not gonna lie. We split the box between three people and I put a little bit of the sauce on the ravioli.

To be honest, I was not impressed. I know it’s a frozen food product, so I didn’t expect to say, “o0o, fresh lobster!” but it was overall way too salty for me.

My friend Lindsay said the ravioli “is not worth the sodium.” I agree and I wouldn’t buy it again.

We balanced it out with a huge bowl of salad.

I was also contacted by a company offering to send me a coupon for sausage that’s available at Whole Foods. I went with the Original Brat Hans Chicken Sausage in Spicy Cilantro.

Spicy indicator! Loved it.

The ingredients are really simple, too. Just chicken, chicken broth and some spices. Now, that’s more like it.

I tried one of the sausages for dinner, in a stir-fry with red cabbage, tomatoes, onions, spinach, garlic and spices.

It was just the perfect amount of spice and I could really taste the chicken. This didn’t have that sodium taste. Since it’s fully cooked, it was also a really easy option for dinner.

I could see myself throwing this into a breakfast if I’m cravin’ some meat in the morning. I liked this product and would like to try some other flavors as well.

I was also sneaking bites of eggplant caviar that my grandma makes. My family eats this stuff like a communal bowl of salad :)

Yum.

Food on wheels

6 09 2010

It’s nice to see so many people spending a lot of time outdoors this weekend. It’s been truly a gorgeous couple of days.

On Sunday, I was all giddy over Parked: Food Truck Fest at Governor’s Island. Some of the best food trucks in NYC got together in one place to feed hundreds of people who descended on the beautiful island. Of course, I was one of them.

The short (and free!) ferry ride over to the island is bomb:

The lines to get the food? Not as much bomb…

But nothing that can’t be cured with a dark beer.

And sips of a light beer, too :)

We inched closer…

And closer…

And then, it was our turn! We were finally right in front of the Rickshaw Dumplings truck.

I got the pork & Chinese chive dumplings with the soy sesame dipping sauce. So worth the wait!

Strategically, we had another group waiting in line at the Cinnamon Snail.

I asked them to get me the Maple mustard tempeh sandwich on grilled spelt bread with roasted garlic aioli, kale, tomato, and onions.

This was so delicious but also, extremely filling. I had no room for lobster rolls or tacos or any other food truck things…however, I didn’t have the patience to wait in line either, so it all worked out :)

Then we went to wonder the rest of the island:

Plant bed…literally!

Art installations in some of the old houses that are now galleries:

Then, we hopped back on the ferry and returned to the City.

What a perfect day! Today, I went to the gym with my dad and am now working on a long article about linear accelerators (radiation therapy delivery systems). Just as fun as it sounds :)

What was the highlight of your weekend?

Satisfying my foodie sensibilities on a gorgeous island was definitely awesome.
