Quick, let’s rate the cheesiness of this post’s title on a scale of 1 to 10. Oh, you guys are too kind.
I recently saw an article in the New York Times titled, “The 11 Best Food You Aren’t Eating.“
Clearly, I was intrigued. So what are the 11 foods?
- Beets
- Cabbage
- Swiss chard
- Cinnamon
- Pomegranate juice
- Dried plums
- Pumpkin seeds
- Sardines
- Turmeric
- Frozen blueberries
- Canned pumpkin
Let’s pat ourselves on the back, shall we? I not only consume most of the foods on the regular basis, but I also love them.
But…uuhhh…sardines?
I’ll try anything once (almost):

I picked up a can of Cole’s Sardines at the store and was pleasantly surprised by the nutritional information. Under 170 calories per serving and over 14 grams of protein.

Here’s what the article says about sardines:
“Dr. Bowden calls them ‘health food in a can.’ They are high in omega-3’s, contain virtually no mercury and are loaded with calcium. They also contain iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, zinc, copper and manganese as well as a full complement of B vitamins.
How to eat: Choose sardines packed in olive or sardine oil. Eat plain, mixed with salad, on toast, or mashed with dijon mustard and onions as a spread.”
I had no idea sardines were such a nutritional powerhouse! I had them on a sandwich, with toasted sunflower bread and Sabra’s Supremely Spicy hummus.

I thought it was really delicious, filling and rich! Another cheap source of protein, no complaints.

Now, I need to go find me some turmeric…
What’s your favorite food out of a can?

Two things: ate sardines the other day on crackers. They were packed in Louisana hot sauce. Totally delicious, especially with a beer.
Also, I just bought about 100 lbs of tumeric and have started only eating Indian food. I wish you were here so I could share my tumeric with you.
haha wow you’d think those 11 foods had just been lifted from blogs!
I guess I’d have to go with pumpkin on this one…are what do you think sardines taste like? I’ve always been afraid to try them.
I think sardines have a very distinct taste. For me, it’s sort of like a mix between tuna and salmon? I don’t know if that makes sense. Because they’re usually packed in olive oil they also taste like EVOO.
I’d recommend trying it. If it’s not your thing, it’s only a can! Not a big investment
Condensed milk! haha

Duh….pumpkin!
Hmm…canned foods kinda weird me out sometimes but I love tuna. And sardines are pretty darn tasty.
Mmm, I love sardines, even if the idea kind of grosses me out. My grandma and I used to eat them together, which is a weird food-bonding memory, I suppose.
I share a memory of taking spoonful of fish oil with my grandma. Apparently, it’s good for you…and disgusting.
aw man canned goods are money.. pumpkin, tuna, cranberry sauce (good one kelsey!), beans, soup, spam (can’t help it)
-black beans
-artichoke hearts
-hearts of palm
-pumpkin
i would love to try canning myself one day though!
Haha, the looks of sardines scare me! Maybe I should try them sometime … if you liked them, maybe I will??
You should absolutely try them and let me know how it went
If you have a TJs or Whole Foods next to you, check out which ones they carry…I feel like those two stores always make less creepy versions of foods that are usually weird!
hehe sardineez!
out of a can, it goes in this order:
1) tuna
2) refried beans
3) pumpkin
4) diced tomatoes
5) beans (black beans or garbanzos)
Oh man, I LOVE canned whole cranberry sauce? Have you had it? I can literally pop a can open and take a spoon to it, (though I usually use a bowl)
Its got so much sugar, but I really do love it. To be fair though, the version I made at thanksgiving by scratch was superior and not from a can.
Cranberry sauce pretty much rules.
I LOVE cranberry sauce in a can! I didn’t even think about that
Someone always brings a homemade version over to our house but I still go for the canned stuff!
