At this point, the devastation in Haiti is well known to the world.
It’s hard for me to get this out of my mind. Ever since reading Tracy Kidder’s Mountains Beyond Mountains, I’ve been struck by the country’s troubles.
Only a few weeks ago, I was also soaking up the sun in the Dominican Republic, a country directly next to Haiti on the island they share.
Tracy Kidder recently wrote a great op-ed piece for the New York Times:
“…at least 10,000 private organizations perform supposedly humanitarian missions in Haiti, yet it remains one of the world’s poorest countries.”
I can encourage you to donate to the American Red Cross.
But if a donation is beyond your reach, see this Pioneer Woman’s blog post for a chance to have $500 donated to a Haitian charity of your choice (I crossed my fingers for Partners In Health).
She will also donate a dime for every comment she receives until Friday afternoon, to Haitian relief efforts.
Just click and comment. It’s simple and yet, powerful.

Thanks for this post. I, too, was moved by Kidder’s book. Haiti needs a lot of international support.
Thank you for this, Olga. I just found out that someone I knew died as a result of the earthquake, and I was left feeling really weird about it. It was great to see that even some clicking and Internet transfers from the safety of my own office can be helpful!
thanks for the link! I hadn’t seen that post yet – what a great idea
My thoughts and prayers are with the people of Haiti. What a horrible tragedy. Thanks for providing that link, girl! I commented and I’ve also donated. So sad
