Hey hey hey! How was your weekend? Mine was fun.
On Saturday night, we saw the MAN, the LEGEND, the Mr. Big Daddy Kane at Celebrate Brooklyn. Last free show of the season
We went out with a bang yo, partying like it’s 1988. He took us back.

From afar...with boxed wine on hand.
Followed by some bar adventures in the City.

With other men, who may or may not become legends some day.

And more snippets of the weekend worth mentioning:
First of all, this is what happens when dad and I go shopping without my mom:

We recently discovered a store by my our house, which I like to refer to as the beer castle. I’m not sure if I shared this with you yet, but my dad and I have a mini-beverage fridge, which is housed in my room. There are times when our kitchen fridge will have a nearly empty egg carton and two carrots in it, but this fridge must always be fully stocked. It’s a priority of ours:

I know what you’re thinking…”healthing it my ass”
But look, there’s seltzer, water and some iced green tea in there too!
Aside from being jolly with my dad at our beer castle, I also ate some new things over the weekend.
I took one of these Heart Thrive Vegan Date hearts to work with me on Friday night. I’ve been kinda getting sick of bars every week and the guy at the health store recommended this product to me.

I liked the ingredient list:

I really liked the fiber and protein numbers. That’s per one heart!

The package suggests heating them up first but I didn’t have access to a microwave in the park. Fortunately, it tastes good as is! It has the texture and taste of a delicious, grainy cookie. I imagine the Raisin flavor tastes more like oatmeal raisin cookies. I’d definitely buy these again. I’ll eat the other heart warmed up as well.
I also tried a new flavor of the Chobani Greek Yogurt family:

Pomegranate! I had it as a part of breakfast with GoLean, flax, a banana & blueberries.

When it comes to Chobani, I’m not really a big fan of the “fruit on the bottom” variety. My favorite flavor is vanilla. But pomegranate is definitely a close second! It’s slightly tangy, which compliments the actual yogurt really well. It’s not too sweet for me (like the other fruit varieties) and there are actual pomegranate seeds in it. I loved it and am really happy that Chobani came out with this flavor.
In other foodie news:
I read an interesting article on late blight, a plant fungus that is drastically affecting tomato and potato harvests this year. The author writes:
“If you love eating flavorful organic field tomatoes, good luck — they’ll be as rare this summer as a week without rain. And those that survive will cost you; we’re already seeing price increases of 20 percent over last year.”
This part of the article, once again, reaffirmed my appreciation for my family’s Brooklyn garden.
But…
The author also goes on to discuss the downside of the increase in home and community gardens:
“Here’s the unhappy twist: the explosion of home gardeners — the very people most conscious of buying local food and opting out of the conventional food chain — has paradoxically set the stage for the worst local tomato harvest in memory.”
If you’re not asleep yet and wonder how the hell growing your own vegetables can actually contribute to the spread of late blight (and what you can do to prevent it), check out the article here.
Are there any organic products that you consume where you can “taste the difference?”
I think a lot of produce is worth the organic price tag in terms of taste alone, but especially tomatoes. Organic dairy (such as organic yogurt) not only tastes but smells different to me. Next time you’re done with a container of organic yogurt, rinse it out and smell it. It smells like fresh grass
I’m going to see a movie with my mom tonight and I’m sure you can guess what it is, or I don’t have a food blog. Review to follow!

woah woah woah, samuel adams has a “summer style”?!? not just a summer ale?
I think I am going to scour the Spirit Haus
I have that exact Heart Thrive flavor in my bar stash right now…the apple was pretty good, so thanks for reminding me to give that flavor a taste.
I can definitely tell the difference between organic and conventional carrots. The organic ones taste like candy in comparison to the conventional–so sweet and delicious!
Ha! We totally have a beverage fridge for beer and wine!
There is a huge difference in taste and smell and even appearance of organic vs. conventional foods. It’s amazing!
hahaha the beer fridge is awesome! I’m jealous of your chobani too, i can’t find it ANYwhere around where i live! have fun at the movie
what a fun weekend! love the dad/daughter shopping trip
the only things I buy that are organic right now are also local – all the fruits and veggies I can get at our farmer’s market are grown organically, but I don’t buy them simply because they are organic. I buy them because they’re local.
I honestly can’t afford to buy everything organic OR local, even though I wish I could.
I really can’t taste a difference with organic foods, so I buy gross, hormone-filled food. Though our new apartment has some tomato plants in the yard, and I’m enjoying those!
I agree, Food Inc or J & J! Serious v. lighthearted
Glad you had a fun weekend! The heart thrive bars look yummy. I’m guessing you’re gonna see Food Inc or Julie & Julia!
I can’t really tell a taste difference with organic foods. But I’m trying more and more to eat them – or at least locally grown.
I love pomegranate flavored yogurt. It’s one of the few sweetened yogurt flavors that I regularly like.
love your beer fridge, it looks like it has lots of goodies in it!
how was it the last free show already???!! where did summer go?
enjoy julie and julia! i can’t wait to see it.
I love the beverage fridge. I was just talking to the boy about getting one for his beer today so I can have my veggie drawers back!
I have to say I agree about the difference in taste with organics, especially dairy.
I’m guessing you are seeing Food Inc. And trust me, after seeing that you’ll only be buying organic and local foods. Mind-blowing! Have fun (unless you aren’t seeing that movie…but still, have fun!).

That Chobani pomegranate sounds amazing. It’ll be the only time to eat pomegranate seeds because I’m too lazy to figure out how to cut open the actual fruit.
I’m guessing you’re going to see Julie & Julia, unless you haven’t seen Food, Inc yet. It looks so good – me and my Mom actually have a date to see it soon too. Can’t wait for the review
