Sensory overload.

18 01 2009

All three of my apartment’s gigantic flat screen TVs are on right now: my dad’s watching soccer in the living room, my grandma some really loud Russian concert in my bro’s room and my mom is watching some cooking/crafts show in my parents’ bedroom…Isn’t TV supposed to bring people together?

Anyway, I woke up this morning and did my hour on the treadmill…My huffing and puffing definitely reminded me that I was away from this baby for a week…

For breakfast, I made a parfait: fage 0%, 1/2 cup GoLean, flax seed, strawberries, blueberries and a drizzle of honey.

Then I got down to baking for my friend’s all day brunch partaaay.

First came the fail proof Tina’s Chocolate Pumpkin Loaf

I also made apple crisp, accompanied by the obligatory vanilla ice cream. This thing was gone in seconds! I used a standard recipe from my head, not sure where it came from.

My lunch was a mix of Russian foods people brought to the brunch. My plate had pretty much pickled everything: cabbage, cauliflower, herring, pickle…the salad was fresh though! =]

I also had some borsch:

I wasn’t the only one who spent the day near the oven. One of my friends made a gigantic red velvet cake:

It looks like a ridiculously obnoxious burger!

My dessert plate: a small piece of the red velvet cake, a weirdly shaped piece of the chocolate pumpkin loaf and some apple crisp with ice cream.

This filled me up but I needed dinner, since I’m most likely staying out late tonight. So I just finished up some chicken and broccoli from my Chinese food yesterday.

And these strawberries:

And I’m off! But you can read on about…

Nawlinz Eats: Part II

Another cool place we went to was the Napoleon House in the French Quarter. This building was offered to Napoleon in the 1800s, when he was exiled, by the Mayor of New Orleans, but he apparently never made it. Nevertheless, the name stuck.

It looks old, right? This building’s over 200 years old!

The bar is known for the PIMMS signature drink: “made to James Pimm’s original recipe, a closely guarded secret known only to six people.” It’s garnished with cucumber slices, really light and refreshing.

We were fancy one night, and went to the Gumbo Shop for dinner.

We split a Hurricane, because after all, we were in Nawlinz!

For an appetizer, we ordered the blackened catfish, which was fantastic.

I got the Combination Platter: Shrimp Creole, Jambalaya and Crawfish Etouffee. It came with soft French bread as well. I couldn’t even speak, it was that delicious.

Other nights, we were less classy (and had less money):

Another staple of Nawlinz is definitely Cafe Du Monde, known for its beignets and cafe au lait with chickory.

Facing the French Quarter:

Sinful deliciousness:

My friend basically made an armor suit out of napkins and still got powdered sugar all over himself!

Another top noch place we went to was a brunch restaurant: Surrey’s

With interesting, carnival like decor:

I started off with a delicious iced apricot green tea:

We split an order of grits! Man, was this rich and creamy!

I got a delicious Mexican frittata with a side biscuit:

Another day for lunch, we got some boiled crawfish! It was spicy as hell.

One of my most favorite meals had to be from J’anita’s, a small restaurant in uptown New Orleans.

We went there for lunch one day and I got the Swamp Reuban: bbq pulled pork and beef with coleslaw and bbq sauce. It also came with two sides (I chose guac and chips and a bowl of gumbo), all for just $7!

Check out the adorable animal cracker!

Another winner for me was Juan’s Flying Burrito, rated as the best Mexican restaurant in New Orleans.

We started off with guac and chips, the best I’ve ever had, hands down.

The burrito, I was less impressed with. I am totally spoiled by Bueno & Sano at UMass, but this one had shrimp in it…I don’t know how I feel about it. It was second best in my burrito tastings =]

We also cooked our own interprations of New Orleans cuisine (with the help of allrecipes.com)

We made seafood gumbo one night:

He should have his own TV show or something:

It came out fanstastic!

Obviously, pecan pie was needed before we left:

And last but not least, who gets on a plane back to NY without drinking a soco lime daquiri in Louisiana? Seriously.

And some random silliness:

haha that’s funny about the tvs, it totally USED to bring people together, but now everyone is so picky about what they watch it just doesn’t work out.

I LOVE your N’awlins recap, such a fun city, and it looks like you enjoyed it to the fullest!
