I actually screamed when I checked the weather at Amherst at the moment. It’s 1F and feels like -12. I’m still in Brooklyn and here it’s 17F and feels like 0! I didn’t dare to leave the house today!
Many fellow bloggers are already enduring the schoolwork on the new semester, but my classes don’t start until January 26th so I’m still at home. I have a lot to get done before leaving next Saturday though! I dread next semester but look forward to it as well.
I woke up mighty late today. My body’s off schedule, since last week in New Orleans we went to sleep in the early hours of the morning almost every night.
After reacquainting myself with my treadmill (which was much needed), I decided on a savory brunch.
In the mix was: 1/4 cup of oats, flax seed, cilantro, 1 egg, salt & pepper.
Here it is all mixed up. I love the taste of yolks and this was very creamy and delish throughout.
I read some stuff and watched TV for a while. My family decided on Chinese food for tonight and I jumped on the bandwagon. I got the Steamed Buddha Delight platter with grilled chicken. I ate most of it and saved the rest for tomorrow.
I completed the meal with some blueberries & strawberries:
My friend is hosting an all day brunch at his house tomorrow and I’ve been asked to do some baking. I’m thinking apple crisp as one dish, since I have all the ingredients.
As promised, here’s an excerpt of my trip. This is the first part of the “Nawlinz Eats” because there’s oh so much more. To be continued tomorrow! Enjoy!
Nawlinz Eats: Part I
New Orleans is proud of it’s caffeine culture, and local coffee shops are on every corner. One day, we went to the Fuel Coffee House for breakfast, and even though the coffee didn’t knock me off my feet, the onion sweet potato quiche did.
I think its taste was magnified by my good mood: it was a beautiful and sunny day.
We raided the
Whole Foods salad bar another day for lunch, but the street car in our view reminded us where we were. They have them all over the city, with various designs.
Needless to say, my tango with vegetables pretty much ended that day. Leon and I only proceeded to sample
the finest of Louisiana’s cuisines:
No, these were really gross. Salty beyond your worst nightmares. Let’s not
even discuss the ingredients.
We continued our quest to find the perfect iced coffee by going to the Rue de la Course Coffeehouse in uptown New Orleans. This was the winner for me. It was perfect.
I also had a turkey sandwich on “black forest” bread, which was magnificent.
Throughout the trip, we ended up at
La Divina Gelateria on several occasions. I got the
Creole Cream Cheese flavor and then a
Carrot Cake later on. It was
amazing.

And then, there were the
PO’BOYS , the downfall of my healthy eating attempts. I’ve never heard of them before coming to New Orleans, but they’re a
huge deal there. People commonly eat them for lunch/dinner and po’boy shops are
everywhere. Since I was there with two of my guy friends, we couldn’t settle on just
any place and went to
Domilise’s Po-Boys,
rated one of the best in Nawlinz.
I had mine with fried shrimp and fully “dressed” (lettuce, tomato, mayo, pickles). It was delicious but I can’t imagine eating it every day! But as they say, when in Rome, do as the Romans.
We also had this pickled okra, which was fantastic! I brought some home for my dad.
That’s the fix for tonight. But I will leave you with some silly pictures:
We’re EVERYWHERE:
My only girl companion:

Yes, my friends do keg stands.
I think this was after a few bars and on the way to a funk show? I don’t even know whose hard hat that is.

My favorite sign in a coffee shop ever:
